Forgotten or Unappreciated Films of the 1980s: Vol. 1

Before he had his face rearranged through both amateur boxing and plastic surgery, the 80s ‘Mr. Cool’ Mickey Rourke played a guy who undergoes surgery to rearrange his disfigured face. Irony aside, Rourke was always a formidable actor and his 80s catalogue is impressive.

Simple Minds – New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84) (1982)

The music seemed to always take itself pretty seriously and the group were growing and realising their atmospheric strengths. They never quite fit with the successful new romantic pretty-boys like Duran Duran or Spandau Ballet, they seemed more aligned to U2’s trajectory. Indeed, when U2 got set to record their breakthrough album The Unforgettable Fire with producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, the group told them they had been listening to New Gold Dream…

Dead Actors Society

Each Oscars ceremony always includes an ‘In Memoriam’ segment, paying tribute to those in the movie world who have passed away in that particular year. Rarely mentioned are those fringe-dwellers, those faces you recognise but can’t put a name to, those people who have never been invited to the world’s largest smugfest…

Queen – A Kind of Magic (1986)

Queen took prog’s cerebral bookish head and reattached it to its body, then gave it a nervous system via strong melodies delivered with a maximum of passion and heart-pumping surges of adrenal energy. In doing so they managed to create a unique style of rock/pop with brawn and brains…

Akira 2.0

Just how much will the live-action remake of Akira suck? Probably a lot. Read more at i09.com (they’re from the future!)…

Drive (2011)

So once again, I’ll try to clean up the mess left by the inane film marketing departments with their dollar sign eyes and tell it to you straight up; contrary to the posters and trailers you may have seen, if you are a fan of the Fast and Furious movies, you will probably hate this film…

Insidious (2011)

Even the most casual film buff would immediately begin seeing similarities to the 80’s classic Poltergeist throughout Insidious. Their plots drift so dangerously close that passing the similarities off as mere homage is drawing a pretty long bow. If this was the only film Insidious resembled though, I may have been able to ignore it…

Radio Free Metropolis (or Show Me The Monáe)

Janelle Monáe has something she wants to say, and it’s an empowering message of love and empathy (laced with a subtext that raises cautionary questions about our behaviour in the future…)

Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

Who knew a movie with such a ridiculous title could actually be a bubbling Jacuzzi of crazy fun, but that’s exactly what Hot Tub Time Machine is. Somewhat aimed at GenX-ers, Hot Tub is one screwball situation after another. It’s absurd and raucous, but unlike the majority of crap today masquerading as comedy behind cheap gross-out and sex gags, Hot Tub manages to be tasteful and witty even while employing that same pantheon of jokes…
