2013…The Year of Hype…

The ad copy for Justin Bieber’s new perfume The Key states: ‘The Key is an inspiring new fragrance that invites you to unlock the endless possibilities of believing in your dreams, bringing you closer to Justin than ever before’. His previous two perfumes were called Girlfriend and Someday. I assume the not-so-subtle message to his fans is: If you buy all three you may hold the key to someday being Justin’s girlfriend.

Röyksopp – Senior (2010)

Last year when Norwegian electro-duo Röyksopp released their 3rd album, Junior, they were obviously continuing the development of 2005’s The Understanding, which was a more synth-pop orientated sound than their 2001 debut Melody A.M. That tasty first album was adding dimension to the ambient electronic landscape mapped by Warp label operatives like Aphex Twin, Autechre and Boards of Canada…

Best Ofs can be strange things. Sometimes they’re a great way of road-testing an artist/band. Sometimes the hits are all you want. Other times you’d be better served avoiding them altogether, and seeking out a particular album. Some bands are defined by their hits (eg: Abba), while others are completely misrepresented by them (eg: Genesis). Whatever the case, this was the first thing I ever got of hers/theirs (Sade is the band, Sade Adu is the singer), so I’m recommending it, because it made me eventually seek out their studio albums…
