Insidious (2011)

Even the most casual film buff would immediately begin seeing similarities to the 80’s classic Poltergeist throughout Insidious. Their plots drift so dangerously close that passing the similarities off as mere homage is drawing a pretty long bow. If this was the only film Insidious resembled though, I may have been able to ignore it…

Battle: Los Angeles (2011)

My instinct with Battle: Los Angeles is to drive in the skewer, place it over an open fire and roast it until the skin begins to crackle. But I’m not going to do that. A film with a title of “Battle: Los Angeles” damn well better deliver a battle in Los Angeles. And that’s exactly what this film does. It offers no apologies for its by-the-numbers approach, and as an audience member with popcorn box and coke in hands, it delivers precisely what you’d expect…

The Loved Ones (2010)

Hey, this is an Aussie horror film…and I am an Aussie who loves good horror. Only, good horror is so rarely Aussie, so I suppose I get a little excited when a film comes along that is not only good, but is Aussie…and not only horror, but Aussie horror. Have I lost anyone?…

The Coen’s True Grit

The Coen Brothers have remade the John Wayne classic True Grit…check out the promotional posters for the film at Rotten Tomatoes…

Catfish (2010)

The marketing idiot who decided to blatantly try to trick moviegoers into believing Catfish is a suspense thriller (when it clearly is not), has done more damage to the film that it deserves. The first rule of film marketing for our current savvy generation of movie-goers should be simple; “Don’t mislead the paying customer”…

Robin Hood (2010)

Russell looks quite hefty for a guy eking an existence as a “lowly archer” in medieval France. You have to wonder what’s on the menu ‘round the campfire outside Chalus Castle. I thought you were dedicated to your craft, Russ? If Bale can starve himself for The Machinist, then how about you step up, buddy…

Food Inc. (2008)

As is plainly stated in the film, the food industry is no longer growing or producing food, it is creating it – whether it be through hormones in living creatures or through genetically modified seeds. But, of course, this is merely the tip of the iceberg in this valuable and ultimately heartbreaking piece of work – one that could be the single most important documentary of recent years…

Kick-Ass (2010)

I don’t know about you, but there is no better way to assure my ass will be first in line buying a ticket than to describe a movie as “Morally Reprehensible”. Overused film-critic phrases like, “The Must-see film of the year”, “Oscar worthy performances” or “A real crowd-pleaser” don’t seem to get bums on seats anymore. “Winner of 14 Academy Awards, including Best Picture!”…meh..so what? Is that the best you can do? What else have you got for me? “This film is morally reprehensible!” Whoa, this I gotta see. You can count me in. “Suzie, hold all my calls”…

Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

Who knew a movie with such a ridiculous title could actually be a bubbling Jacuzzi of crazy fun, but that’s exactly what Hot Tub Time Machine is. Somewhat aimed at GenX-ers, Hot Tub is one screwball situation after another. It’s absurd and raucous, but unlike the majority of crap today masquerading as comedy behind cheap gross-out and sex gags, Hot Tub manages to be tasteful and witty even while employing that same pantheon of jokes…

The Human Centipede (2010)

Far too perverse and disturbing to enjoy, but much too audacious to fully ignore, The Human Centipede is destined to become a “midnight-movie” cult classic in the vein of Blood Sucking Freaks and The Beyond. Let me make it quite clear that this film should not be entered into lightly – there is not much in the way of graphic violence and gore, but it is rife with psychological horror so extreme and unsettling that you will probably never forget this traumatic experience…
