Wadrick's Celluloid Dungeon

Zack And Miri Make A Porno (2008)

zack_poster

Starring Seth Rogen, Elizabeth Banks, Craig Robinson, Jason Mewes & Traci Lords.
Written & Directed by Kevin Smith.

Zack (Rogen) and Miri (Banks) are platonic losers with dead end jobs and overdue bills. It’s the middle of winter, and when the heat is turned off in the house they share, the two bumbling buddies concoct a plan to make money – shoot a porno film after hours in the coffee shop where Zack works. Enlisting the help of friends and other local characters, they proceed in their venture with typical results. Let me cut in here and ask what the f#@k has happened to Kevin Smith?! When he broke onto the indie film scene in 1994 with the cult hit Clerks, expectations were high for his future projects. And with Chasing Amy in ’97 and Dogma in ’99, he delivered on his promise. But since Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Smith’s quality of work has deteriorated steadily. Jersey Girl was an abysmal failure and Clerks 2, the long-awaited follow-up to his debut, was a strained excuse for a comedy film. And now we find Smith again wallowing in adolescent, toilet humour – as though he is writing films for each new generation of pimple-faced teens with overflowing hormones. The thing is, Smith is better than this. He has proven to be an intelligent writer and filmmaker, especially with the aforementioned Chasing Amy and Dogma. Now, his writing seems to want to conjure the spirit of originality that was poring from him after Clerks, instead of trying to move forward. After Mallrats was released in ’95 to scathing reviews, Smith publicly apologised (somewhat in jest) for the film. Unfortunately, no apologies have been forthcoming for his recent duds, prompting one to think he simply doesn’t care anymore (yet given his rapport with his fans online, this surely cannot be the case). So, come on Kev, give us something worthy of your talent.

  1. Dude are serious?

Watch An evening with Kevin Smith or the other 2 he has done since the first and it is easy to see that the man is a walking dick and fart joke.

Not only that he is a bright guy and talented filmmaker.

Zack and Miri had me laughing and when Jeff Anderson got his face frosted like a chocolate cake I about fell out of my chair and actually had tears steaming down my face I was laughing so hard.

Before anyone accuses me of only liking low brow filth let me also point out that I watch all kinds of films and find the entertainment value of most genres. Going into this flick I knew it was going low brow silly fun all the way and I was OK with that. However when I sat down to watch Chasing Amy I was amazed the story that came through in between all the dick and fart jokes. There may not have been as many as In Jay and Bob and Zack and Miri but they were there a plenty.

  2. How can you say that? This movie is funny.
Is it because Seth Rogan is a super jew that you hate it?

  3. @The Movie Whore
Dude, I dig Kevin Smith. I thought that was clear in the review. I even thought Mallrats was better than most people seemed to think it was.
But Zack and Miri was crap…predictable and poorly made. Kev has always been prone to the “dick and fart” jokes, but in his earlier films, they were embedded into an intelligent story. They didn’t BECOME the story. As I said, he is better than this.
Surely, you cannot believe that this film was even in the league of Clerks, Chasing Amy or Dogma.

  4. No it’s not but it is damn funny. I is one of those flicks that lets you turn off the brain for while and just sit back and laugh. Kind of like the Harold and Kumar movies.

  5. True, maybe Zack and Miri is an ok movie to switch the brain off to, but I think Wadrick feels the same way alot of Kevin Smith fans do….we just thought he was destined for true greatness after Clerks, Chasing Amy etc, but his last few films have been pretty damn hollow in comparison. Surely nobody can deny that?

As for Seth Rogen…he could be Jewish, Islamic, African or albino Caucasian for all I care, he’ll NEVER be funny. Totally missed the boat on that guy.
